Help! 2 weeks of tinnitus, what to do?

Hi, i have tinnitus about 2 weeks ago when i wake up, went to doctor and found nothing wrong with my ear and doesn't seems to have hearing loss. Was prescribed Betahistine which seems to help but then the improvement were on and off which i'm not sure if it's just a placebo effect?

Please share your opinions on what kind of early treatment i should try now? I read about Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for sudden onset of tinnitus and desperately want to try but worry if it might make my tinnitus worse as i usually has problem clearing my ear during flight take up and landing.

Please help...

Re: Help! 2 weeks of tinnitus, what to do?

Hi theeddi,

Welcome to the forum.

There is no scientific indication (in terms of controlled studies) that HBO therapy works. Some people report positive effects, but this may as well be a placebo effect. Having said this, if you are very desperate, it might still be worth a try (before you blame yourself afterwards not having done enough). You should of course mention your pressure equalization problems when you discuss this option with your doctor.

Have you tried whether painkillers (Paracetamol (Tylenol in the US) or Aspirin) have an effect? They are designed to suppress the activity of the nervous system, so they should also have some effect on the tinnitus (at least they had a big effect for me, and also for some others I have spoken to (in this forum as well)).

In any case, don't expect an immediate cure,. You have to be patient with tinnitus, This is very much a long term thing.

Re: Help! 2 weeks of tinnitus, what to do?

Hi Thomas, i haven't try any painkillers yet. I'm still on Betahistine, left about 3 days to finish. I will finish it and then observe how my tinnitus will be.
I will give the painkillers a try when i need relieve. I read about your tinnitus story and feel encouraging!

Btw, have you encountered any members here who has good result with HBO?

Thank you very much Thomas... for sharing your experience, made a place for us to talk here and giving quick response to us.

There was an entry in the German forum a couple of years ago where somebody reported that the HBO therapy had helped him (see http://forum.mytinnitus.de/en/viewtopic … 1423#p1423 ; click 'Translate this page' at the top). There are few others who have done the HBO therapy, but without any effect.

Ok Thomas, thanks. Today i felt my tinnitus gradually improving wondering if Betahistine is effective for me and could that means i possibly have vertigo problem or meniere's disease!?

Re: Help! 2 weeks of tinnitus, what to do?

Do you suffer from vertigo then? Even if yes, it doesn't mean it is Meniere's disease. Vertigo problems at some stage are not uncommon with tinnitus. You shouldn't think in strict categories here anyway. The nervous system is very complex and can produce the strangest effects if things get slightly out of balance. You shouldn't therefore attach that much importance to any detail. You can take it as a good sign though that your tinnitus responds positively to something. It shows that there is potential for improvement. Just take it from day to day at the moment and get encouragement from any progress. On the other hand, don't let the occasional bad days worry you; they are bound to occur due to the variability of the nervous activity. Important is only the long term improvement though.
