Help Please

Please please read this..

Hi. I am 26 years old and recently think I've started suffering with tinnitus. Ive been extremely stressed recently and I have JUST got over bad anxiety (which has now come back with this) and an illness bug which caused congestion badly. I also suffer depression but think the passed few days I've started getting tinnitus. It's a hissing noise inside my head. I can't get rid of it no matter what I do. I do not know, but prey, that it is just a build up of stress and the congestion that is doing this and as the doctor prescribed me antibiotics on case I have an ear infection, that this is not a long term thing and it will clear up. I have a 3 year old son and this noise is effecting my every day life. Big time. It feels like I'm trapped inside my own head listening to this noise take over, my anxiety is through the roof and I am now on tranquillisers to calm me. I have been in tears so much and don't know what to do. Even watching tv or listening to the birds, I feel myself flicking back to this noise. I feel like its in my head and slowly driving me mad. I need to train my brain to stop thinking about it. But how? Please help. I'm tired, stressed and very anxious about what if I have to deal with this for the rest of my life? I don't think I'd cope. I really feel trapped sad((

Re: Help Please

Hi Sara,

Welcome to the forum.

I can fully understand your situation. Most people have similar feelings when they develop tinnitus. But you shouldn't despair. It may be a nuisance at the moment, but eventually it will get better again. Don't think it will stay this way forever, because it won't. Take things from day to day for the time being and don't think so much about the future.

Do I understand it correctly that you started taking the medication (antibiotics and tranquillizers) only after you developed the tinnitus? I am asking because occasionally these can actually trigger tinnitus, in which case you should stop taking them.
On the other hand, tranquillizers can help to improve the condition, as anxiety and panic make it usually much worse.

I normally suggest to take a few painkillers (Paracetamol or Aspirin) for a couple of days (which improves things for some people), but I would probably not recommend this together with the other medication you are taking.

Re: Help Please

Hi, yes I am taking antibiotics and tranquillisers. My friend said yesterday that tranquillisers can trigger tinnitus. I'm catch 22 as I can't not take them as my panic attacks are so severe that I end up in hospital. I don't know what to do. I'm laying here at neat 5am in tears, feeling sick, unable to listen to any other sound but the fuzzing in my head. I feel trapped inside my own brain. I need to calm down but don't know how. I need to train my brain on being able to listen to these other sounds. The problem is I am a weak minded person and let these things get to me rather than take control. I've read about people having ent appointments and behavioural therapy "my appointment is in 3 weeks..." I'm in dispare and I need something done ASAP. I cannot begin to describe the aggravation I'm going through. I'm shaking and feel sick.

Re: Help Please

I started taking the tranquillisers before this started. For my panic attacks. Antibiotics are for my inner ear as my doctor thinks there could be a problem which is what is causing it

Re: Help Please

Sara,

Did you take the antibiotics also already before the tinnitus onset? Certain antibiotics can cause tinnitus in some cases as well (as can many other medications). If you google for the names of both the tranquillizer and the antibiotic in combination with the word 'ototoxic' then you might be able to find out whether they could be responsible. You could ask your doctor then to change to different substances that are less of a risk, just to be on the safe side (because they may or may not have been responsible).

In any case, in the medium to long term you should consider stopping both medications. I don't think it is appropriate to prescribe antibiotics without having firm evidence that there us actually an ear infection at all. And for your depressions, psychological advice and support may be more helpful than tranquilizers. You have to conquer your insecurity and dependency and try to be more pro-active to deal with the condition. Just relying on tablets (if they help at all) is not a solution in the long term. I know it is easier said than done, and for the next few weeks you may be struggling, but like I said, let this not demoralize you. You have to tell yourself that it is only a matter of time until it improves. In the meanwhile, try to cope with it the best you can. Try to distract yourself as often as possible, even if it is difficult. Any minute that you don't spend perceiving and thinking about the tinnitus is valuable for an improvement..

Re: Help Please

The antibiotics were because of the sound I can hear. He thinks it may be congestion causing it. Today has been a bad day in terms of it taking over. I find myself zoning out and listening to it. It's horrible. Really not coping well. Someone told me that I can be referred to ENT pretty quickly. I've not been well today, I ache and been sick a lot with constant shaking. I really am hoping that this is just part of an illness and not a permanent thing as my ears are all clicking and popping when I yawn or move my jaw. It's still horrible though. My friend is a doctor and I asked about my tranquillisers and he said it wouldn't do it. But I will defiantly google it. Do you have any tips to 'self train' not to think about it? Or is it just a case of getting used to it? Was in tears again at 5am this morning. I've been under so much stress recently, but got a wedding coming up Friday, so hopefully I will forget it then.

Re: Help Please

And if this is an illness/ tablets causing it, does that mean when I come off them or get better that it will disappear?

Re: Help Please

Yes, it is likely to get better if it is caused by a drug you are presently taking and you discontinue it or reduce the dosage. Have a look at http://www.ata.org/sites/ata.org/files/ … _Oct12.pdf and see whether your medication is on the list. Note that even if you do find it there, it doesn't necessarily mean it has caused your problems as they occur only for a minority of people. Still, you shouldn't take any chances and get off them at least for a while to see whether it makes a difference (but obviously, you should discuss this with your doctor).

The clicking and popping is quite normal in the beginning. Many people have it, but it will gradually disappear again. You shouldn't be afraid of it. They are just normal processes in your nervous system that for some reason have become audible due to your present nervous over-sensitivity.

Re: Help Please

For a fast short relief idea.  There are App available for free that can give you sounds that can reduce your attention to the ringing so you will not focus on it so much.  They are not magic and it will take several hours or days to get used to hearing it.  The sound should not mask your tinnitus but be in a matching level or below it,  Never above.  I use a paid for App that gives special tones that help with sleep at night.  This takes getting used to, about 2 weeks.  It is called Relax M.P. and there is a free version.  There is no drugs just distraction and stress relief.
