Introduction - New

Hello. My name is Melissa. I have been suffering from high pitched tinnitus (sounds like very high pitched electrical sound) in both ears since an accident where I hit the back left of my head in December 2012. I had a concussion and whiplash, as well as a large hematoma. the hematoma healed. The high pitched ringing remains. I am a stay at home mother. Tinnitus has taken over my life. I went to drs and ct scans were normal, mri showed some bruising but no fractures, and hearing is normal. It was diagnosed as "post concussion tinnitus" and I was sent home to live with it for the rest of my life. That could be a very long time and was quite emotionally overwhelming, and still is. I went to a chiropractor who claimed he would have me better in 6 weeks and hundreds of dollars later, no improvement, although neck traction seemed to help best. Now my choices are hearing aids for sound therapy with chimes or neuromonics, neither of which our family can afford. I found a sound generator app for my ipod after listening to a high pitch lullaby for four months. Now I listen to birds, water, chimes, and such 24/7. I had to go off Ativan which was keeping me calm for pregnancy reasons. I am looking for support as to not get hopeless and just give up on life. It seems the ringing is getting worse. I do have crunching and popping at the base of my neck still that I did not have before the accident where I hit my head. I don't know what to do. I have children that need me. I do not use stimulants such as caffeine, no sugar, etc. All I can do is trust God and cry out to Him for help.

Hi Melissa,

Welcome to the forum.

First of all, it is by no means true that you have to live with your present condition for the rest of your life. For most people it improves after a while or vanishes altogether. It can take some time though, up to 6 months in most cases or sometimes even longer, but eventually it will improve. For the time being you should try to take things from day to day and not think so much about the future. This will sort itself out eventually.
It is good that you take some measures to improves things (even if it is not successful), but don't overdo it, it would only stress you out and make things worse.

I don't know whether it would work in your specific case, but you could also try whether taking normal painkillers (Paracetamol (Tylenol in the US) or Aspirin) for a couple of days can help. It helped me a lot in the beginning and also some others I had contact with. I would probably also address the problem with your neck again and see whether there is a treatment for this.

Don't worry, it may be difficult at the moment, but eventually you will get on top of this, and it will not take over your life anymore.

Thank you Thomas for your kind reply. I took Tylenol today and it is better than the addictive drug Ativan. Great caution should be taken in taking Ativan for Tinnitus as I had a seizure trying to withdraw from it. It is always rather difficult to see the other side of a mountain when one is in the valley.
