sufferning from tinnitus driving me mad!

Hi I am new here and am going crazy with the sound of tinnitus constantly in my ear - just the left side.  Its there all the time and during the day I have the radio or TV on all the time to mask or block out the high pitched noise. I miss silence !  night time is the worst, I have had this for about 3 months now and cant get off to sleep without somesort of background noise. In the end I bought a CD "sleep easy" off CDbaby.com which has helped a lot, cos it is like calming music but without having a tune so I use this most nights. Strange thing is, when I wake up on a morning I hardly notice the T but by bedtime it is horrible again.
Any advice welcome.
thanks Rob

Re: sufferning from tinnitus driving me mad!

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forum.

Tinnitus is largely a nervous problem, so it is therefore paramount that you avoid all unnecessary further stimulation of the nervous system like through caffeine and also alcohol and stress. On the other hand, all nerve calming measures should be beneficial. In the latter sense, I have for instance made good experiences (especially in the early phase) with the occasional painkiller (Paracetamol or Aspirin), and later alcohol-free beer also proved effective in calming the tinnitus down.

For more specific tips see my Home Page or the entries in the forum.

Note that all these are merely suggestions though. The tinnitus can be very different from person to person, and it is lastly only your own experience that can tell you what improves your tinnitus and what worsens it.

In any case, thanks for the CD tip. Some people may appreciate it.

Re: sufferning from tinnitus driving me mad!

Thanks for the tips and advice, i am amazed at how many people are affected by this condition.  I notice that some days are worse than others but so far have not managed to find a link or pattern to why some days are worse.
this forum is an excellent idea.
Regards, Robert

Re: sufferning from tinnitus driving me mad!

Hi Rob,

As I said before, tinnitus is a nervous problems, so it depends to a large extent on the activity of your nervous system. If it is agitated for some reason, the tinnitus will appear louder. It is not always possible to tell the reason for this, but in some cases it is more or less obvious, and it is here where one has try to take counter-measures.
