What should I do for Depression

I've days when bouts of depression sets in that makes me wonder if it was depression that caused the tinnitus or the tinnitus that caused the depression.

What does one do to relieve such dark bouts of depression?

I know I have to be patient and hope for an improvement in the tinnitus that I am new to.

Depression - anxiety - panic can't be good for tinnitus, especially in my case, that's what seems to induce it in the first place.

I have done ENT checks, and hearing is perfect. I've yet to undergo CatScan Angiography or ECG.

I have scheduled myself for tinnitus counselling.
However, it appears that calming drugs can only be provided by psychiatrists?

I thought I should reserve some tablets of Xanax or whatever is prescribed for in case panic strikes upwards.  In my case, panic attacks appears to have done something to trigger tinnitus, first of the pulsatile kind, then the high-pitch kind.

Why have I not tried Thomas's paracetamol suggestion that carries hope of reducing Tinnitus level?

That's because I am scheduled for acupuncture treatment (for anxiety) and am holding off the suggestion so I can monitor the effectiveness of acupuncture.  It may be important for me to attend to my nervous system first, and hope there is a link there to improve my anxiety-induced tinnitus.

I've understood acupuncture has been used to treat depression along with anxiety.  However, every bit of help we can give to soothe our nervous system counts, and would appreciate any sharing on how else to deal with depression.

Re: What should I do for Depression

Alena,

It may sound paradoxical, but the tinnitus could actually help you with the depression as it can give you a new focus in life. Yes, it may be difficult right now, but if you don't sit back and feel sorry for yourself but actively try to deal with the condition (by whatever means (within reason)), then this can give you some meaningful focus. Don't contemplate too much about the future but take things from day to day at the moment. Things will improve, but you have to be patient and not expect immediate results.

Re: What should I do for Depression

Depression still pops up but less regularly.  It's now more of frustration depression than clinical depression.  The fiery intensity is not experienced these 2 weeks.

Docs wouldn't prescribe any drugs even at its peak.  All I had to help me combat depression were prayers, careful diet including herbal / supplements, and much emotional support from friends and family.

Another significant factor was Thomas' various advices. There is something in his words, in his compassion, that helps me ride the worst of those depression episodes.

I know the process of healing is filled with ups and downs, but knowing support is there matters so much.

Is your depression from the feeling there will be no end to your situation?  No cure?  The severity?

I know my severity and fear of no end had me right to the brink.  I could not even get 5 minutes of relief.  I still never get complete relief but I may go 1/2 hour or more and not notice it sometimes.  This gives me some hope for the future.  I have been 5 month now the first 2-3 were the worst.

Yes, Jim, all of the above.  Including deep grief for the loss of the carefree good old days where tinnitus isn't even in the equation of life no matter how challenging life could be.  As well, the depression comes out of the blue even then I was distracted with other stuff and wasn't thinking of the condition.  That was scary.

I was lucky to receive counselling in various form from friends and fellow sufferers. Thomas' level-headed advice consistently help relieve the spiral of depressive thoughts when I kept thinking the worst, a no-no for healing. I do what I can to heal.  Prayers are an important source of hope and healing for me.  Another source I could not go without is Traditional Chinese Medicine, the herbal mixture is meant to soothe nervous wrecks like me.

The anxiety and depression did reduce from its fiery heights, but it could also be that mercifully, the tinnitus sounds is off its fiery heights as well.  No control over tinnitus, just doing what I can to calm the nervous system, and appreciating anything that helps in the healing process.

Re: What should I do for Depression

For the depression my best advice is to search out others in the forum for positive results they have achieved.   That is why I do check in when I can to give others my progress and to get inspiration or insight from others.  For me there is improvement.  Good and bad days.  To day is a bad one, yesterday I went for hours with almost nothing.  Compared to where I was 5 months ago!!!  It really does give me hope.

Many might not agree but I have used sleeping bill for the last 5 months it was the only way I could sleep and gave me some of the break I needed.  I have been using Ratio-Zopiclone and am in the process for the last 3 weeks of reducing the level as I try for habitulization.  (I don't know how to spell it)

Alena,
I have sent you an return email regarding your inquiry.
Regarding depression, anxiety and tinnitus. Question - Do you drink a lot of coffee or alcohol? Do you smoke? We can discuss this and adenosine receptors another time if the answer to these questions are yes.

Everyone who has trouble sleeping or relaxing because of tinnitus is going to hate me. I have had ongoing tinnitus for 20 years and have never had a problem sleeping or relaxing because of it.
When I has 18 I had anxiety which caused various problems including a stomach disorder then finally palpitations.
A physician at the time suggested reading "Relief Without Drugs" by Dr Ainslie Meares. I haven't looked back ever since. Only you can quiet your mind. I highly recommend it.

Thank you, Harvest King.

No caffeine or smoke in my lifestyle.

Good support from Thomas and pals, added to TCM medicine, must have kicked in - I manage to avoid sedatives or anti-depressants so far. Having calmer days now although this is a difficult condition to live with.

Re: What should I do for Depression

Alena,

One of the biggest problems that came after my T, was D/A/PD all that you mentioned...

I'm a devout christian so of course the first thing i recommend to anyone, is getting surrounded by a group of people that encourage you everyday that are like minded people. They will help you see through the darkness.

I too was in a deep dark place. In the same week my T started, my wife had a miscarry. All hell broke loose.

but hope is out there. I don't try and push Jesus down people's throats, but what i will say is that i could not have gotten through some of those times without Him and the friends he gave me.

Second, you mentioned not taking anti-d's and other pills... The most complicated thing was finding the will power to fight to live everyday past the darkness.

I found out that High doses of Vitamin D is the best remedy for anti-depression. Please talk to your DR. about this first, and what dose you might take. I went to mine, and due to the depression caused by the T, my chemical balance in my body was way off.

Start on a Vitamin D regime per your DR. and life will be different within a few weeks. it gives you life, and clear vision for the future.

best of luck,

Benji
