Hi, I went to see a neurologist about my tinnitus. I've had it now for about 14 months. Its non stop buzzing 24/7 or very high pitch sounds 7500 hz to 12000 hz. Also with the noise I get headaches, head pressure, sinus problems and sore neck. The neurologist spent over 1 hour with me in her office going over everything that has happened in my life that may be causing my tinnitus, headaches, sinus problems and sore neck. She believes all of these things can be the results of migraines. Chronic Migraines, you may not know you even have them. She informed me that doctors now know that 60% of all sinus headaches are from migraines. I've had sinus problems for over 35 years, and the neurologist stated has any ENT stopped the problem. The answer was no, she stated all these years you may have been suffering from migraines not sinuses. The neurologist has me on 400mg of B2, 400 to 600mg of magnesium citrate and 50 mg of Elavil. For the past week my tinnitus seems to be less bothersome. That is until today, I had a beer with dinner and started rubbing my left temple because of some pressure pain. All of a sudden tinnitus came screaming back into my left ear. I will say this I've had some good moments this past week so I'll stay the course and see where it takes me.
I hope this info helps someone else.

Yes the neurologist did mention caffeine but advised me just to lower the amount not remove it. Caffeine withdrawal can cause migraines as well. She didn’t say anything about the alcohol expect about red wine. Still she didn't advise me to stop it. What she does think is my body chemistry is out of whack causing me to experience tinnitus. New hearing test have shown that I still have a full range of hearing without loss. They think the tinnitus was causing blockage of the sounds in the higher range on the past tests.
It seems strange all the doctors are baffled as to why I have tinnitus. Even the Canadian Hearing Society stated that I didn't fall under the normal tinnitus complaint. They were the ones who advised me to see a neurologist because of the headaches I get with the tinnitus. The neurologist did say it would take time and there is still no guarantee that the tinnitus will go away. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Hi Tony,
Avoiding caffeine can be a simple measure to improve migraines as well as tinnitus. And you should avoid alcohol as well.

Tony,
I can only recommend not to blindly follow any advice (be it by your doctor or anybody else), but to try it out yourself. Otherwise you might be wasting years on the wrong track.
I can only say that for me only complete avoidance of caffeine helped to substantially reduce the tinnitus. And with regard to migraines, I read a few years ago an article about a scientific study where it was reported that caffeine avoidance makes the migraine problems completely disappear for a considerable percentage of people.
