Recreating my tinnitus on a synth (for fun)

Hi everyone,

It's a great relief to find this forum.  Hello from Cape Town South Africa!

My tinnitus started about 3 weeks ago and has been with me constantly ever since.  I'm a musician and have now been for extensive ear tests (apparently there's no abnormal damage for my age).  I've just turned 30 and coming to terms with the ringing has been frustrating, flipping between depression and strength to overcome it.  Right now, as I type this, it's getting LOUD!

My tinnitus seems to change in volume; sometimes overwhelming, sometimes hardly there at all.  But always there.  It also seems to be more in the middle of my head instead of my ears, and does slightly change timbre (i.e, high pitched monotone, atmospheric static etc).

The mildly interesting thing I find is this.  When I sit in front of my keyboard, I pitch one my synths right up in the octave range using a standard sine wave.. and tadaa.. I can actually find the note in my head on the keyboard. (double the intensity!).  But I can't hear the next semitone up when I play it.  So I'm hearing the last audible frequency in my hearing register.

I have another friend who's 38 and had tinnitus for 10 years - when I find his "note" "ring" on the keyboard it's two semitones down from mine (probably due to his age), and yet he also cannot hear the next semitone up after his "ring".

Anyway, this is the only pleasurable find I've had other than finding this wonderful forum.  Thomas, thank you.  Have been reading and will continue to read.  Also some other great posts like Tonyf with "Perception of tinnitus".

Tomorrow I'll try start with the 2 asprin dosage..  Need to keep positive.  Very difficult.

Much love and respect to everyone on here.

Re: Recreating my tinnitus on a synth (for fun)

Thanks so much for sharing. I'm a musician that has kind of accepted tinnitus in the same way a builder accepts a callus on his hand. I've found that I can "inside my head" change and even "manipulate/center" the frequency of the ring up or down by a wide range. My "note ring" isn't a constant note, only a constant ring. Any thoughts?
