Tinnitus & Altitude

Hello

I have recently booked a trip to Everest Base Camp (5400m above sea level)

I hadn't thought about the fact that altitude and a lack of oxygen could have an impact on my tinnitus. A GP gave me a very vague 'it may make it worse' and when I asked if it would be permanent she simply shrugged her shoulders. So I am now wondering what the effects may be and whether is it unsafe for me to travel up the mountain. I really couldn't bare my tinnitus getting any worse but at the same time this is a once in a lifetime trip that I so badly want to go on and I really don't want to cancel.

Does anyone know what the effects may be? Or if it is safe? Or if the tinnitus gets worse will it be permanent?

Thank you

Rebecca

Re: Tinnitus & Altitude

Hi Rebecca,

Welcome to the forum.

Is your tinnitus sensitive to air pressure changes (low or high pressure periods, air travel etc.)? If not, I think its is unlikely that you will have any problems on the trip, especially as the ascent will only be gradual, so you should have time to acclimatise yourself.
Have you asked the organizers of your trip what they think about this?
