Hi. First I want to say that I'm totally new to this forum . SECONDLY, this is the best forum, and best source of information that I've seen anywhere on the internet.
I'm just a bit nervous about the possibility of this thing being a symptom of AN. I know this is not a forum of doctors - I'm not expecting professional advice - just whether or not I should be running to get an MRI. I'm in China - going to get any trustworthy medical attention means a 5 hour ride on the bullet train to Shanghai. So before I jump i was wondering if anyone could offer advice of any kind. Thanks so much, and happy to have found this forum.

I guess i should just briefly mention my symptoms. I have steady, persistent high pitched ringing in the left ear. Seem to feel the vibrations from it. Ear even seems a bit warm - although this could be my focus on it. It started about a week ago, after a short flight from another part of China, in which my ears really hurt from the flight. It's the worst upon waking in the morning, or from a nap. I'm 54, by the way. Thanks to anyone who is taking the time to read all this. 再见

Hi brambostic,
Welcome to the forum.
I am not a doctor either, but from what I have heard, an acoustic neuroma is quite rare, so it is rather unlikely that this is the cause of your tinnitus. You also would have reduced hearing. The only way to be sure about this is an MRI. All other diagnosis methods are very uncertain.
Your tinnitus seems to have been triggered by the air pressure changes during the flight, which may have led to problems with pressure equalization, to which your hearing system responded with the tinnitus.
Have you tried to make some pressure equalization by holding your nose closed with your fingers and pressing some air into your ears from inside?
Also, you could try to take some painkillers (Paracetamol or Aspirin) for a couple of days. This may at least improve the condition.
