Has anyone seen an association between Zyrtec and tinnitus?

This morning I woke up going back to the days where my tinnitus problem began (1.5 weeks). Immediately, everything was very clear in my head: the problem started when I took Zyrtec.  I thought that there was a good chance that they were associated because otherwise it would be too much of a coincidence that precisely when I started taking this medicine, my bothering symptoms began. This is what I found:

Less Common Zyrtec Side Effects:
Rare Zyrtec side effects occur in less than 2 percent of people taking the drug. Because these side effects are so uncommon, it is difficult to tell whether they are caused by Zyrtec or something else.
These less common side effects include but are not limited to:
·  Loss of appetite
·  Flushing
·  Migraines
·  A spinning sensation (vertigo)
·  Gas
·  Hemorrhoids
·  Bladder infection (urinary tract infection or UTI)
·  Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)

Fortunately, I only took 4 pills. Now I know that I have to avoid taking this medication in the future. Hopefully this condition will go away. This is the main reason why I have avoided taking unnecessary medication all my life. Today, I also found that my tinnitus pitch is around 8,909 Hz to 9,438. I am seeing this condition as a problem to solve. If I cannot find a solution, I will have to get used to it and try my best to ignore it.

listening to notched filtered music might help
even though they say that method works for tinnitus frequencies less than 8kHz.

I have been listening to notched music for a week now. I feel that it has some positive effect even though it is early to say it works for me.
i will keep listening for months to see if it works..

Hi NewSufferer,

Welcome to to the forum.

Many drugs can potentially cause tinnitus. I would certainly avoid Zyrtec in your case if there are any other medical alternatives.

As for dealing with the tinnitus problem: have you tried whether taking a few painkillers (Paracetamol or Aspirin) for a couple of days helps?

Re: Has anyone seen an association between Zyrtec and tinnitus?

Thank you for your suggestion Thomas. I have tried the notched music therapy, some medicated ear buds, Advil PM, ear wax removal drops, ear drops for tinnitus, but nothing has helped so far. I've tried my best to ignore T, but it's hardest when going to bed. For sure, I won't let T get the best of me. Either it goes away or I'll have to get used to. Thank you for your pointer.

You shouldn't expect a quick fix here with any method you try. The nervous system takes quite a long time to re-adjust. You have to think in terms of several months (3-6) before you get on top of this. So be patient and don't stress yourself out with combating the condition (which would only make matters worse).
