Tinnitus and facial nerves??

I'm new to this forum and have had very loud tinnitus in my right ear for about 6 months now.  Like a lot of other people, it seemed to start in the middle of the night since I woke up with it.  It was originally in both ears but worse in the right one.  The left ear now rings only rarely which is definitely  a huge relief.  I've had hearing tests and was told that the ringing in my right ear is due to a very small loss of hearing in my right ear.  I never got an explanation for the ringing I originally had in the other ear as well.

The odd thing I find about my tinnitus is that I am able to stop it for a few minutes by just touching my ear or the right side of my face.  Also, sometimes shaking my head a little will also stop it temporarily.  I mentioned this to the ENT I saw and she told me that what I was experiencing was impossible and that it must be just a coincidence.  However, after living with this for 6 months, I can definitely say that it is no coincidence.  I have no explanation for it but it makes me think that it is somehow connected to my facial nerves.  I wish I could find a doctor that was capable of thinking "outside the box".

Do you know of anyone else with this kind of experience?

Thanks for this forum!!  It is comforting to know you're not alone.

Re: Tinnitus and facial nerves??

Hello Elise,

Welcome to the forum.

Many people experience similar effects on their tinnitus (either way) when touching regions of their face. It could have to do with facial nerves, but I wouldn't interpret too much into it. Nervous sensitivities of this kind are quite common especially in the early phase, but this gradually dies down again.

Also, please note that the diagnosed hearing loss is in many cases only an apparent one. You simply can't hear the test tone that well any more at certain frequencies due to the tinnitus. Once your tinnitus has subsided, the hearing tests will be normal again as well.
