Finding it difficult to work!!!

HI Iam new the forum,

I have had tinnitus for about thirty years which has been like someone moving their finger around the top of a wine glass. All those years ago I was told there was nothing that could be done to cure or alleviate cure this probllem,  At first it was very distressing but as time passesd it was not bothersome at all.
Three months ago I devoped a high pitched noise in my right ear, which is tolerable in quiet situatiions but at work (which is fairly noisy) produces an extremely high pitched screaming noise which I can tolerate for only about 30 minutes.  My empoyers have been good and found me the quietest job they can, but working in a freezer warehouse at tempertures in excess of -28 degrees celius my days are numbered!

Since my secondery tinnitus accurred three months ago my ears scream within minutes of driving my car.  It is so bad that I can barely concentrate to drive.  I have tried ear plugs at work and in the car but seems to make matters worse.  I have seen an ENT specialist and have started

I have seen an ENT specialist and have been giveen a white noise generator but have been advised it could take up to 12 months to make any affect.

I had not heard of anyone decribe my symptoms that I expierence whilst driving or being in a noisy enviorment. Is this Hyperarusis?

I believe that my secondery tinnitus was triggred my immense stress over the previouse twelve months and that some day I will manage it again.

Re: Finding it difficult to work!!!

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the forum.

Regarding your question:  what you are describing doesn't seem to be hyperacusis, because that is when you perceive normal sounds just as unbearably loud. It has as such nothing to do with the tinnitus (although it can accompany tinnitus in many cases at some stage).

Generally speaking, tinnitus can of course be quite variable (simply because the nervous activity can be quite variable), but your case certainly sounds rather extreme. I can only say that in case of such bad periods, I always succeeded in calming this down to a manageable level again by taking simple painkillers (Paracetamol or Aspirin) for a couple of days (usually just one in the evening for 2-3 days would be enough). Alcohol free beer also used to work in calming my tinnitus down.

Stress obviously can be a big factor in aggravating the nervous activity and thus the tinnitus, so you might want to try to reduce this. But you should also be looking at things like reducing your caffeine and alcohol intake (if this is applicable in your case).
