The first 2-3 months had been hell for me too, but after a further couple of months I could at least see light at the end of the tunnel as I eventually managed to get it better under control. I was then already sure that the problem would diminish more and more to the point where it becomes non-existent, and that's exactly how it turned out (not quite as rapidly as I estimated initially, but nonetheless).
It is difficult to set an exact time scale for this, since it depends on the person and the circumstances, but most people get a grip on this within 6 months or so (it sounds like a long time, but unfortunately nervous conditions take much longer to heal than a broken leg).
The most important thing is that you don't get depressed and don't lose hope, because that would make it even more difficult. A positive attitude and will to get better is already half the cure here.
