Hello,
Has anyone experienced dizziness with their tinnitus? I've been reading many of the posts and haven't noticed any mention of dizziness.
On March 8th, I woke up dizzy and nauseous. This lasted a couple of days, and as it started to subside, the tinnitus started and has been with me ever since. The dizziness is still present, but only when I move my head certain ways. I can only assume they're related.
However at the same time I had an ear blockage that I was trying to clear with an ear bulb syringe. So a concern of mine is that I somehow caused the tinnitus by trying to clear the blockage with water pressure. I fear I may have caused irritation or damage to the ear drum, in turn causing tinnitus, though I believe that is unlikely.
I've been taking Ginkgo Biloba and Lipo-Flavonoid but it's too soon to say if they're effective. Today I was given a Tinnex tinnitus therapy device to try out, but I am 7 weeks away from my ENT appointment and would rather see the ENT specialist first before trying the Tinnex.
Thank you for your time.
Steve

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the forum.
Periods of slight dizziness in connection with tinnitus are not so unusual, after all, the balance organ is contained in the ear. In your case, it very much looks like both the dizziness and the tinnitus are symptoms of the same problem, but only your ENT doctor could tell you more here.
If your tinnitus bothers you too much at the moment, try whether, like for me, an occasional painkiller (Paracetamol (Tylenol in the US) or Aspirin) can help. More importantly, you should avoid caffeine and alcohol for the time being.

Hello,
Well to provide an update, I finally saw an ENT specialist and resolved the dizziness. It was caused by BPPV which is a positional vertigo disorder likely caused by a piece of calcium crystal floating around in one of the semicircular canals. He did a couple of neck movements to shift the calcium particle elsewhere and my dizziness is gone.
I'm hoping that was the cause of my Tinnitus, but feel it is unlikely as Tinnitus is not reported to be a symptom of BPPV and it has not gone away.
I just started using the Ti-Ex device since I might as well try something else. I will report back if I have any success with it, in the mean time I have a follow up with the ENT in a couple of months for further evaluation.

Steve,
I hadn't heard of BPPV before, but even if it should have caused the tinnitus, it is not surprising that the tinnitus does not disappear after the BPVV seems to have been fixed (or generally speaking after any cause has been fixed). The point is that once it has established itself, the tinnitus can maintain itself through a kind of acoustic feedback loop. The brain now thinks this is the normal state of your hearing system, so you have to gradually 'retrain' it not to focus any more on the tinnitus. This obviously can be a lengthy process.
By all means keep us up to date how you are getting on with the Ti-Ex device.

Hi Jody,
I am quickly coming up to six months with tinnitus and have good days and bad days as well, but overall it isn't too bad. At least the dizziness is gone but it seems that was unrelated to the tinnitus anyway.
I just saw my ENT specialist last week and the next step is an MRI. If the MRI shows nothing, then there's nothing more he can do and hopefully it will diminish and disappear over time!

Steve -- Would you say your tinnitus was a mix of good and bad days when you were two months in? I'm just trying to see if I'm advanced in my healing process or right where others were. As I said, I have days right now where I'm CONFIDENT it's going away... But I'm getting smarter as time goes by and realizing that there's just good and bad. Yesterday was bad.
Also, the pitch is changing. Today (for the first time), my left ear isn't so invasive. It's more of a relaxed ringing... (If anyone can even believe that ringing could actually be relaxing...) My right ear went from a beeping ring to a relaxed ring/high pitched hissing, as well. It happened much faster for my right ear, though. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Steve!

Jody,
In the short term there will always be a more or less pronounced variability (that is good days and bad days), but in the long term it will gradually get better overall, so that in 6 or 12 months time even the bad days won't really be bad anymore (if you still notice the variations then at all).

Thomas, you always make me feel better. I'm just really struggling to sleep at night and I'm studying every little thing about what's going on in there. (I shouldn't be...) I know the sound machines help, but night time is when the depression and desperation sets in. I really hate this. :-\ Gonna try to hang in there, but 6-12 months seems like eternity. 2 months has been Hell.
